Antique black hardware issues sorted

The most common problems of rust, corrosion and droop have been resolved with an innovative range of door hardware from Coastal Group

The trend for black antique door hardware is showing no signs of slowing down as period properties and historic buildings are enhanced by its effortless elegance and class. However, the more traditional base material of malleable iron can lead to endless problems for home-owners, manufacturers and fitters.

In response to growing demand, Coastal Group have developed an innovative range of hardware that incorporates traditional design and modern performance with none of the drawbacks.

“We all love the look that’s achieved with black antique hardware,” explains Coastal Group’s Managing Director, Loren Jenner. “But in the past it often comes with an apology that rust and droopy handles are inevitable. It was a great project for our new product development team who got stuck in to finding an alternative.”

The resulting DURATIQUE range addresses the following key issues raised by customers:

1.     Hardware rusting and failing

2.     Inconsistent finishes making it time consuming and awkward to fit

3.     Handle droop and spindle rattle

1: Hardware rusting and failing

No-one wants to see their stylish new front door ruined by rusting hardware.

Those brown streaks running down door panels are never a good look but rusting is a massive problem with antique hardware and one of the most common causes of site callbacks.

As well as the expense of fixing these issues, it's not great for any door manufacturer's or installer's reputation.

Coastal Group’s DURATIQUE range delivers the same aesthetic with none of the rust:

·        The base material is cast stainless steel, so even if the top coat is damaged the hardware won't rust

·        The hardware is coated with a durable electrostatic polymer top-coat in an antique finish for protection

·        All fixings and components are also stainless steel, with their external face finished to match the hardware so no more nasty rust streaks ruining the door

·        Handles have been successfully Salt Spray Tested to Class 5, so even in seaside environments they resist the elements and keep their stylish good looks

2. Inconsistent finishes making it time consuming and awkward to fit

Door manufacturers prioritise quality, ensuring the highest standards for their customers. But when it comes to adding the finishing touches with black antique door hardware, the handles, knockers and fixings may all be slightly different sizes; not ideal for speed and efficiency.

Fixing locations on DURATIQUE products are CNC machined so door manufacturers can batch-produce, saving time and making it much quicker and easier to fit the door hardware.

3. Handle droop and spindle rattle

How many times have you seen play in a black antique door handle? The handle droops, the spindle rattles and you have to move it a few degrees before it operates the lever?

The DURATIQUE door handle range is fitted with a high quality dual sprung mechanism. This, combined with the high quality spindle, ensures a nice positive action, returning the handle consistently to its original position, every time.

They’re even independently tested for durability, to BS EN 12217, achieving 200,000 cycles.

For a consistent elegant feel across your doors and windows, you can now offer customers a suited range, complimenting DURATIQUE door hardware with matching black antique window handles.

Physically seeing and feeling the robust quality of DURATIQUE hardware makes the decision easy for homeowners, so Coastal Group can provide stunning showroom display boards. These impressive displays simplify the selection process for customers and give door manufacturers and installers an easy upsell.
