Why Timber Sash Windows Are The Most Popular Choice Right Now

As a timber window & door manufacturer we see requests for products of all shapes and sizes.

Everything we design is tailored to our client’s requirements, from acoustics, thermal qualities, design and finish.

We offer a range of window products, one of which being Timber casement windows. These are a fantastic option for those that want a sleek, modern product. Casement windows offer a flush-line appearance and can be fitted in single or double panels.

However, the majority of requests we see are for Timber Sash windows. Box sash windows retro-fit in place of original timber box sash windows in older properties, or create a traditional appearance in new-builds. They can offer authentic period styling and the latest window technology, including double glazing for top thermal and acoustic performance. The distinctive deep moulded internal profiles are available in a variety of styles with elegant glazing bars, and can be manufactured in any of our three core product range styles.

Spring Sash windows offer the perfect solution for new-build projects and buildings requiring a flush-reveal installation. These double-glazed units ensure ultimate standards of security, thermal and acoustic performance, which exceeds the requirements of current Building Regulations.

In conservation areas and in more modern buildings of traditional architectural style, we have designed a simple box cover to completely conceal the current spring balance which achieves an authentic period aesthetic.

What sash window would suit my property?

Aesthetically and from a performance and security perspective, spring and box sash windows are very similar. They both have an elegant, classic look, designed to compliment buildings old and new, and for the past 70 years have remained a firm favourite amongst our clients.

Why timber?

Longer lifespan

When compared with alternative materials, and with correct maintenance, timber has a much longer lifespan than alternatives. uPVC has a relatively short life of 15-25 years and Aluminium up to 30 years. However, timber can outlive these materials by up to 30 years.

Aesthetics

In a recent survey, 59% of homeowners felt that timber windows offered a wider opportunity for design and style options than alternatives. Timber is also helpful when clients are restricted by planning rules in Conservation areas or form part of listed buildings where single glazing or period styling and finishes is important.

Value

The initial cost of timber windows and doors may be higher than alternative materials, however the overall cost of timber products over their lifetime will be far less due to their expected lifespan of 60 years.

Sustainable

Timber is the only mainstream construction material that is almost infinitely renewable and regenerative. As Carbon Neutral suppliers, we ensure that our materials are ethically sourced from well managed forests, localise our supply chain and minimise waste.

Performance

Timber compares favourably with other materials and has strong performance for it’s strength, security, acoustics, G and U values.

Wellbeing

Materials have a direct impact on stress levels. In particular, wood has been known to relax the autonomic nervous system and boost productivity and creativity by up to 45%.

How can nature influence your product choice?

Nature themes can be found in the earliest human structures and for years designers have been trying to understand which aspects of nature impact our satisfaction the most.

For example; do you prefer a garden view over a crackling fire? Or perhaps you find crashing waves calming? All of the above can make us feel a certain way; scared, happy, relaxed or even healing.

Research by ‘Duplus’ confirms that since the pandemic they have seen people being more drawn to the outdoors and Biophilic design – buildings and interiors that are full of ‘Nods to nature and natural design including organic shapes, natural materials, plants, and nature-inspired colours.’

Recent studies have shown that buildings constructed from timber and feature exposed wood in their design can offer stress-reducing effects, similar to the effect of nature exposure. Workplaces that feature greenery and plants can increase health and wellbeing by 13%, and even productivity is improved. Wood is said to have the same effect. Not only that, it’s no secret that timber is a natural insulator and buildings built in mass timber can improve energy performance greatly.

We are excited to see wood being more widely recognised as not only something that can offer value and monetary savings, but also something that can improve our mental health and contribute towards making us happier people.

So whatever your next project, why not consider Timber Sash windows from Mumford & Wood
